How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU uses this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync, possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. However, the code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It's a bit tricky to test because there are several pins on the connector, and each has its own functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is operational, it should be reading around 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this sensor, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed, i noticed a huge decrease in power. It was as if the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors were not firing. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, three were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump out. The fourth one remains closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I get zero ohm. I assume that get more info the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is not plugged in and runs fine when it is plugged in but it still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when it is unplugged, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do. I think I've ruled everything else out. I'm here afraid i may have missed something. Please let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is simple to test them to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with more info the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's side). 4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that must be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, for example. In order to do this it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these goes badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic replacement key for audi a3 scanner which could cause engine shut down.

A damaged G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox or a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, and/or an unfire when in gear. It is likely that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you experience any of these symptoms. The good news is that they are very affordable and readily available particularly in the case of an Bosch model, which is what we have. If you prefer, GM's version of this part would be a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be a cause for many problems in your car. It's an essential component of the Audi's transmission because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicle's crankshaft is spinning. This sensor could cause the transmission to malfunction and other components of the car to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU uses this signal to regulate fuel and boost, and also to timigrate. It also relays it to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer, between the ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should detect a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms in these areas. This is a standard component across the Audi 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC through the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU, so the best parts could be found in wrecking yards.
